Hamza djaballah
Algeria
An Algerian scenographer from the city of Laghouat in the Algerian desert, Hamza DjabAllah was born in 1981. He graduated in 2007 from the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts, one of the most prominent academic theatre training institutions in Algeria. He later joined the doctoral program at Djilali Liabes University in Sidi Bel Abbès.
Hamza is known for developing scenographic concepts that merge aesthetic and philosophical visions. He believes that a model (conceptual stage design) is not a ready-made concept but rather the outcome of the scenographer’s harmony with the spirit of the text and the play in all its elements. He also creates visual spaces where light, color, material, time, and symbolism intertwine, encouraging the audience to engage deeply with its meanings and questions.
Some of his major theatrical works include Waiting for Calm, The Ancestors Are Growing More Ferocious, and Alienation, among others. These productions combine text, music, direction, and scenography to achieve profound human, philosophical, and aesthetic depth.
He has received several scenography awards at numerous Algerian and international festivals. Hamza is also an academic, currently teaching at the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts, and has previously held a senior executive position at the Algerian Ministry of Culture.
